What Is an Authoritative DNS Server?

 


The Domain Name System (DNS) is a globally coordinated, decentralized, hierarchical naming system for computer networks, servers, or other resources associated with the Internet and/or a private intranet. It links different information with domain names normally assigned to each of the involved entities. This is done by an authoritative body known as the DNS or the Domain Name Registration.

An IP address is a string of numbers that uniquely identifies a computer or domain. Each computer has its own IP address. A DNS server is authoritative and keeps record of all domain name registrations and other relevant information. These records are stored in a database called the WHOIS database. It can locate the registered domain name and IP address through the query method and the RAR files. The registered domain name and IP address can also be found in the free WHOIS database.

The domain name servers function as the main information repository for domain-related queries. They contain DNS server logins as well as servers that forward DNS requests. The forwarding of DNS request is controlled by IP address or name servers.

DNS resource records are the information highway for zone-related queries. These records contain operational definitions of zone-related resources such as names, addresses, fields, codes, and algorithms used in DNS server operation. They are also referred to as root zone, security zone, or even host-allowed values.

There are three major components of the DNS mechanism: the DNS server, the DNS client, and the DNS root directory. The DNS server is the computer on the internet that creates and modifies DNS domain names and IP addresses. The DNS client is software that is installed on the computers used by end-users to access the DNS server. It searches for DNS domain names and IP addresses and translates them into IP addresses on a specified network.

In addition, there are a few name servers used by service providers. Usually, these services have their own IP addresses and they translate domain name queries to IP addresses for their clients. Some providers also use their own private international IP networks rather than using public IP networks. Some of these providers use their own translation system. A DNS server also implements various protocols. These protocols allow clients to establish connections with the DNS server and make DNS queries. Most commonly, the protocols implemented on a DNS server are the following: EDNS, ICQ, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), TCP/IP, and BIND.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) functions as an independent third party to provide coordination and maintenance of the DNS system. This ensures that there is consistent and predictable behavior of the DNS server and all DNS clients and servers.

In summary, an authoritative DNS server is responsible for consistently generating the DNS responses that are most relevant to a user's query. This is achieved via an application layer or response protocol. The most relevant and appropriate response from such a server is the result returned in the IP address and query name fields during a DNS query or during a DNS reply. The authoritative DNS server is typically a common domain name registrar, which is managed by a DNS hosting provider.
